The First-Time Freediver's Fear Survival Guide: Why Your Worries Are Normal (And How We Handle Them)

Thinking about trying freediving but feeling nervous? You're not alone. Every single student who walks through our doors at Freedive NWA has had at least one of these fears. Here's the truth about what really happens - and why you're safer than you think.

Routinely overcoming fears is one of the factors that makes freediving so addictive to those who participate. It is a deeply empowering experience and is used to treat anxiety and PTSD.
Routinely overcoming fears is one of the factors that makes freediving so addictive to those who participate. It is a deeply empowering experience and is used to treat anxiety and PTSD.

Fear #1: "What if I can't hold my breath long enough?"

The Reality: You already hold your breath longer than you think.

Here's something that might surprise you - most people can comfortably hold their breath for 1-2 minutes without any training. In our Try Freediving course ($75), students regularly achieve 1:30-2 minute breath holds by the end of just half a day.

The secret isn't superhuman lung capacity. It's proper technique and relaxation. Our breathing sessions teach you how to slow your heart rate (we've seen heart rates drop to 43 beats per minute during deep dives - that's the mammalian dive reflex in action), which naturally extends your breath-holding ability.

What we do differently: Every course starts with pool training where you're never more than arm's reach from the surface. No pressure, no rushing - just gradual, comfortable progression.

Fear #2: "I'm scared of deep water and not being able to see the bottom"

The Reality: You control your depth, always.

At Beaver Lake, our primary training site, visibility varies, but you're never diving alone or beyond your comfort level. Our 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio in open water means Sam or one of our certified instructors is right there with you.

Plus, here's what most people don't realize - freediving isn't about going as deep as possible. Our Basic Freediver course (no certification required, $195) focuses on depths of just 10-15 feet. That's barely deeper than a swimming pool's deep end.

What we do differently: We use a gradual progression system. Pool training first, then shallow open water, then only deeper if YOU want to progress. No one pushes you beyond your comfort zone.

Fear #3: "What if something goes wrong underwater?"

The Reality: Freediving has an excellent safety record when done properly.

This fear makes complete sense - you're trusting your life to proper training and safety protocols. That's exactly why we take safety so seriously at Freedive NWA.

Sam holds certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED, and emergency oxygen administration. Every student signs medical clearance forms, and if there's any question about your health, we require doctor approval before training.

Our safety protocols include:

  • Location-specific safety planning for every dive site

  • Buddy system - never dive alone

  • Conservative depth limits based on your experience level

  • Immediate surface support during all training dives

What we do differently: We're the only SSI school in the US focused solely on freediving. This isn't a side business - it's our specialty, and safety is our top priority.

Fear #4: "My ears hurt when I go underwater - what if I can't equalize?"

The Reality: Equalization challenges are common and completely teachable.

About 80% of our students initially struggle with equalization - it's the most common challenge we see. The good news? It's a skill, not a talent. With proper instruction, nearly everyone can learn effective equalization techniques.

Our courses include dedicated equalization training, and we offer specialized equalization workshops for students who need extra practice. We'd rather you take extra time to learn properly than rush through and risk discomfort.

What we do differently: If you don't master equalization during your course, we offer additional pool sessions at no extra charge until you're comfortable.

Fear #5: "This sounds expensive - what if I don't like it?"

The Reality: We offer low-commitment options to test the waters.

A $75 Try Freediving course is less than most people spend on dinner out. It's a half-day introduction where you'll learn basic breath-holding techniques and try shallow water freediving in our pool.

If you love it (and most people do), that $75 can be applied toward any of our certification courses. If freediving isn't for you, you've only invested half a day and the cost of a nice meal.

What we do differently: We want you to be confident in your decision. Our Try Freediving course exists specifically to let you experience freediving without a major time or money commitment.

The Truth About Freediving at Freedive NWA

Here's what actually happens when you take a course with us:

Day 1: Academic learning (via the SSI app you can complete beforehand) and pool training. You'll be amazed at how much your breath-holding improves with just basic relaxation techniques.

Day 2-3: Open water training at beautiful locations like Beaver Lake. You'll practice what you learned in the pool, but now with the incredible experience of gliding underwater in a natural environment.

After certification: You'll have access to a community of local freedivers, equipment discounts, and the skills to safely enjoy freediving anywhere in the world.

What Our Students Say

"...Sam created an environment where I felt safe, supported, and helped grow my confidence. His calm energy and trust in me shifted my mindset - I gained confidence and felt more comfortable in my dives than ever before." - Jessica Perez, a recent graduate of the Freediver Instructor Training Course

"When I first started, I had such a fear of open water, lack of confidence in myself, and struggled with holding my breath, thinking I could never improve. Training and certifying with Freedive NWA has given me such strength and mental calm. Now being in the water feels like flying to me." - Bekah Skaggs, Advanced Freediver student
